At a ceremony in Bishkek on 22 October 2015, Urmat Cholukov, University of Central Asia’s School of Professional and Continuing Education (UCA SPCE) Project Coordinator, received the Excellence in Local Government award from the State Agency for Local Self-Government and Inter-Ethnic Relations under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic. University of Central Asia Receives Long-term OPIC Support to Complete its Second Campus in Khorog, Tajikistan
The University of Central Asia (UCA) is rapidly progressing to complete the construction of its second campus in Tajikistan, scheduled to be ready by 2017, at a total capital layout of $94.4 million. Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the United States Government’s development finance institution has extended $30 million to complete Phase I construction of its Khorog campus. This support marks OPIC’s second partnership with AKDN, following OPIC financing to expand the Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.

Kyrgyz Prime Minister Jantoro Satybaldiyev officially kicked off the finals of the University of Central Asia’s (UCA) 2nd Annual Football Tournament at its Naryn Main Campus on 31 August 2013. UCA Clearing 160,000 Cubic Metres of Rock at Khorog Campus Site
To prepare its Khorog campus site for construction, the University of Central Asia (UCA) is clearing and crushing up to 160,000 cubic metres of rock. The cleared land will house UCA buildings and the crushed stone will be used as raw material in the construction of roads, the Khorog campus buildings and other infrastructure.  The site is located 2,100 metres above sea level and the campus will include academic, athletic and residential facilities surrounded by landscaped parks. The design and building process will employ best practices in campus design, seismic design, construction methods and environmental sustainability.

University of Central Asia releases 2nd edition of English-Russian Glossary of Public Policy Terms and Concepts
The University of Central Asia’s (UCA) Institute of Public Policy and Administration (IPPA) published the second edition of its English-Russian Glossary of Terms and Concepts in Public and Economic Policy, Administration and Trade. The book was launched during a regional four-stop tour by renowned economist and policy analyst Oleksandr Kiliievych, who compiled both editions of the glossary. Kiliievych, an Associate Professor in the Department of Economic Policy of the National Academy of Public Administration under the President of Ukraine and author of over 240 publications, arrived in the region this week to share his perspectives on the development of this expanded edition and its utility in the region.

UCA Course on Central Asia Musical Traditions Teaches and Inspires
“When she sang, a sense of peace overcame the classroom, which felt like a light, warm wind. Her voice was strong and bright, light and free, and made me forget about my problems.”  It is rare that these kinds of emotions are invoked in a hot, stuffy classroom at a busy city university. However, this is what undergraduate student Gulzira Kamytzhanova experienced listening to her professor Dr Elmira Köchümkulova perform on the Kyrgyz instrument komuz, in a ground-breaking new course on Central Asian Music offered by the University of Central Asia (UCA).

UCA’s commitment to cultural preservation inspires donation of unique collection from Prof. Vasiliy Kisunko’s library
The University of Central Asia (UCA) received nearly 600 books from the collection of the late Vasiliy Kisunko, a Russian art historian and professor. The collection includes books on culture, history, politics and political economy published by Soviet historians between 1960 and 1980.  The collection’s geographic focus is “the East,” as defined during that time period to include the Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia and China. “Perhaps what is most interesting about this collection is its historiographical significance,” said Gregory Kisunko, Vasily’s son, “These books explain history through the eyes of historians during the Soviet period. People don’t write like that anymore.”

UCA Builds GIS Capacity in Central Asia
The University of Central Asia (UCA) is working to strengthen the capacity and use of Geo-Information Systems (GIS) in Central Asia. “Building capacity in GIS is an investment in the future of research and the wellbeing of communities in the region. The methodologies offer unique tools to take a spatial perspective on both opportunities and risks in a variety of sectors,” said UCA Senior Research Fellow Dr Bettina Wolfgramm, a Senior Researcher at the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), University of Bern.

UCA Senior Research Fellow appointed Foreign Member of Academy of Sciences, Republic of Tajikistan
The University of Central Asia’s (UCA) Senior Research Fellow and Cornell University Professor Karim-Aly Kassam is no stranger to Central Asia and its academic institutions. Dr Kassam has spent the last seven years researching the Pamir Mountains of Afghanistan and Tajikistan, working closely with UCA and the Academy of Sciences, Republic of Tajikistan. It is no surprise he was elected Foreign Member (Academician) of the Academy of Sciences, Republic of Tajikistan. Dr Kassam was also appointed English Language Editor of the Academy’s Journal of the Biological and Medical Sciences.  The ceremony took place during the annual meeting of the Academy in Dushanbe on 12 December 2012.

In September and October 2012, the University of Central Asia (UCA) and the State Agency for Construction and Regional Development under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic held a series of roundtables for representatives of bodies of local self-government (Aiyl Okmotu) around the theme “Regional Development:  Foundation of Reforms”. The roundtables - led by K. Narbayev, Head of SACRD, and attended by members of Parliament, representatives of the government, and deputy Governors of Oblasts - provided a unique forum to discuss the many issues relating to the socio-economic development of rural areas and the administrative-territorial reforms.

In July 2012, UCA’s SPCE and AKF jointly launched a nationwide campaign in the Kyrgyz Republic to encourage youth to submit innovative social entrepreneurship ideas. Nine winners received seed funding of up to US$3,000 to implement their idea from the Aga Khan Foundation, USA.

Naryn entrepreneur Gulmira raises her baking standards after SPCE Entrepreneurship course - Issue 117
A native of Naryn city in the Kyrgyz Republic, Gulmira Toktosunova worked as a teacher for most of her adult life. After retiring from teaching five years ago, Gulmira, 45, decided to set up a bakery as an alternative means to support her family. “I have five children. I knew I needed to continue to support myself and my family,” said Gulmira.

On 20 May 2011 The University of Central Asia’s School of Professional and Continuing Education (UCA SPCE) Naryn building was officially opened by Akylbek Japarov, Member of Parliament and Head of Finance and Budget Committee together with Vice Governor of Naryn Oblast Emilbek Alymkulov. Also present were Aga Khan Development Network Representative Nurjehan Mawani and UCA Director General Dr. Bohdan Krawchenko, French Ambassador Thibaut Fourriere, and Koba Gvenatadze, International Monetary Fund Resident Representative.

Norwegian Ambassador visits SPCE programmes in Naryn, Kyrgyz Republic
On 16 and 17 March 2011, His Excellency the Ambassador of Norway to the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, Dag Malmer Halvorsen, visited the University of Central Asia’s School of Professional and Continuing Education (UCA SPCE) in Naryn. This was part of an extended visit to Naryn and Osh to review activities funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (NMFA).

The UCA Research Programme: Partnerships & People
UCA signed a Letter of Agreement with the Mountain Partnership and Mountain Forum (MP/MF) to serve as the host of their regional hub for Central Asia.  The MP/MF are global initiatives that serve mountain people, their governments and institutions by providing them with platforms for networking to exchange of knowledge and experience.

UCA’s AKHP Expands activities in Kazakhstan
UCA’s Aga Khan Humanities Project (AKHP) continues to expand its reach in high schools and universities in Kazakhstan.  In summer 2010, workshops to train teachers to use the AKHP curricula through modern pedagogy were held in Astana and Taldykorgan (located in Almaty oblast, close to Tekeli, the site of the future university campus). The six-day sessions focused on two AKHP courses:  Introduction to Humanities and Individual and Society.

UCA Supports “Roof of the World” Music Festival in Khorog
From July 16-18, 2010, Khorog Park was alive with musicians, tourists and cultural enthusiasts, during the annual Pamir ‘Roof of the World’ music and cultural festival.  Traditional music and arts performances from Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, and India took place throughout the weekend to give festival-goers gaining a better understand of the diverse cultural heritages of the region.  The festival featured exhibition booths from NGOs, as well as locally-made arts and handicrafts for sale.

President of the Kyrgyz Republic Roza Otunbaeva visits Naryn
A new three-kilometer diversion of the Naryn State Road constructed by the University of Central Asia (UCA) was formally handed over to the Naryn Oblast Administration on 1 September 2010 in the presence of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Roza Otunbaeva, ministers and government officials during a working visit to Naryn Oblast. Aga Khan Development Network Representative Mrs. Nurjehan Mawani, UCA Director General Dr. Bohdan Krawchenko, UCA Deputy Director John Moylan, and Deputy Naryn Site Manager Kuban Sydybaev, received the distinguished guests. As part of the event the guests also reviewed progress on infrastructure development and construction at the UCA Main Campus site.

UCA’s Central Asian Faculty Development Programme (CAFDP) was established to ensure that academics from Central Asian with top international credentials are strongly represented in the University’s faculty. Through partnerships with universities around the world, CAFDP offers opportunities for Central Asian students interested in academic appointments at UCA to pursue studies at the doctoral and masters level (as preparation for doctoral studies).  CAFDP offers two avenues of support:

UCA Assists with Aid to Southern Kyrgyzstan
University of Central Asia employees were profoundly saddened by the killings and wanton destruction that occurred in the south of Kyrgyzstan. In solidarity with communities that suffered, employees made contributions from their salaries to purchase and ship 2.5 tonnes of medical supplies and food that was distributed to Uzbek and Kyrgyz families, with additional provisions for orphaned children.

UCA visits Teacher Training College (TTC) in Shugnan, Afghanistan
On 14 June, UCA Director General Dr. Bohdan Krawchenko and SPCE staff visited the Teacher Training College in Shughnan, Afghanistan, where UCA is implementing a cross-border grant funded through the Aga Khan Foundation of Afghanistan. Dr. Krawchenko met with TTC staff and toured the facilities, including the newly refurbished computer lab where 200 students will receive training in IT.
