University of Central Asias Mountain Societies Research Centre and partners launch Herders Manual for the Western Pamirs of Tajikistan

21 December 2011, Khorog, Tajikistan - The University of Central Asia’s (UCA) Mountain Societies Research Centre and the National Centre for Competence in Research North-South (NCCR North-South) launched its Herders’ Manual for the use of livestock herders in the Western Pamirs. The Manual, currently available in Russian and Tajik languages, was developed as a tool to facilitate capacity development of village institutions, herders and other relevant stakeholders for the sustainable management of pastures. UCA convenes Forum on Entrepreneurship and Economic Development in Southern Kyrgyz Republic

16 December 2011, Osh, Kyrgyz Republic - The University of Central Asia (UCA) convened a Forum on Entrepreneurship and Economic Development in Southern Kyrgyzstan. Held at Osh State Social University, the Forum brought together 34 members of the academic community from Osh, Batken and Jalalabad to discuss enabling factors for and obstacles to the successful growth of entrepreneurship, from their perspective as leaders in regional higher education institutions.

University of Central Asia publishes two volumes, rich historical ethnographic research on the Kyrgyz Küüs

05 October 2011, Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic - The University of Central Asia launched its latest addition to its Cultural Heritage Book Series, the Kyrgyz Küüs: Analysis, Thoughts, and Opinions, Volumes I and II (Kïrgïz küülörü: Iliktöölör, oylor, pikirler, 1-2 kitep) at Bishkek’s Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. In his welcome address Head of the President’s Administration Emilbek Kaptagaev appealed to the guests to value cultural treasures: “Today’s event represents a significant contribution to the preservation of the Kyrgyz cultural heritage and has given a new life to komuz melodies.”

Roundtable on Entrepreneurship and Economic Development in Southern Kyrgyzstan

12 July 2011, Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic - The University of Central Asia (UCA) convened a "Roundtable on Entrepreneurship and Economic Development in Southern Kyrgyzstan." The event marked the release of "Giving Entrepreneurs a Voice in the Future of Southern Kyrgyzstan." Based on interviews with over 125 entrepreneurs, the USAID-supported report captures perspectives on opportunities and barriers to business development in the country’s southern region. The Roundtable featured a panel discussion on challenges and recommendations for business expansion.

Pastoralism in Central Asia: Status, Challenges and Opportunities in Mountains

13 June 2011, Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic - The University of Central Asia (UCA) and the National Centre for Competency in Research North-South (NCCR-NS) co-hosted an International Symposium on “Pastoralism in Central Asia: Status, Challenges and Opportunities in Mountain Areas”. His Excellency Torogul Bekov, Minister of Agriculture, Kyrgyz Republic delivered the opening remarks highlighting the importance of the topic dedicated to development of mountain societies, regional cooperation in addressing key issues in the region, and the initiatives of the Ministry of Agriculture to promote environmentally-frie​ndly practices. First Afghan students graduate from SPCE Khorog

14 May 2011, Khorog, Tajikistan - For the first time, learners from Afghanistan graduated from the University of Central Asia’s School of Professional and Continuing Education, Khorog. At a ceremony held at the the Khorog Theatre on 14 May 2011, 63 Afghan learners received awards together with 139 learners from Tajikistan. The 5th Graduation Ceremony learners received certificates in Accounting Technology and Certified Accountant Practitioner; Levels Preliminary, 2 and 3 of English for Business; Conversational English; Conversational Russian; Training of Guides; Information Technology; Professional Development Certificates in English and Mathematics; International Computer Driving License credentials; and Certificates in Technical Vocational education.

Musical Arts of the Pamirs Book Launch

21 January 2011, Dushanbe, Tajikistan - The Musical Arts of the Pamirs, Volumes I, II, and III was launched on 21 January 2011 at the Ismaili Centre, Dushanbe. Published by the University of Central Asia (UCA), the three-volume set is part of a five-volume study on folk music, oral history, and theatre traditions from the Pamir region of Tajikistan. Widely viewed as the most comprehensive work on Pamir music and heritage to date, The Musical Arts of the Pamirs is the culmination of approximately 40 years of field work by Dr Nizom Nurdjanov, along with his colleagues, Dr Fayzulla Karomatov and Dr Bahriniso Kabilova (Please also see related Press Release).
