Mountain Societies Research Institute Annual Report 2017
In 2017, the Mountain Societies Research Institute (MSRI) has continued to develop activities to contribute towards its core objectives. Of particular note was the completion of the UCA Khorog campus construction where students will study Earth & Environmental Sciences. MSRI is delighted to be contributing to the curriculum for the course as well as other teaching programmes, including the Connecting to your discipline programme which takes places across both campuses. Such activities are building a strong foundation for collaboration between MSRI, academic faculty members and students in delivering world class education and research to the region.
In addition, MSRI has continued to advance strategic working partnerships and hosting arrangements along with a diverse portfolio of research projects, which are helping to advance the Sustainable Mountain Development agenda in the mountains of Central Asia. Current major research topics include integrated food systems, natural resource management, resilience and adaptation to the impacts of climate change, and transboundary conflicts and security. Whilst continuing to develop research in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, our geographic focus also has expanded into northern Afghanistan with the strategic Pathways to Innovation project, which seeks to build regional academic and research capacities.
