Memory Makers: UCA Summer Upgrading Camp
This article was written by UCA undergraduate student Aleksey Lee.
Three different countries. More than one hundred ambitious students from the region of Central Asia. And dozens of awesome counsellors and professors, coming from all around the world. Indeed, what an unforgettable experience it was to be a counsellor at the University of Central Asia’s fourth Summer Upgrading Camp.
The goal of the camp was to bring together Central Asian students to experience life at a university with a high standard of education, and provide them with an opportunity to work and study under the guidance of international instructors. They lived in a culturally diverse environment of people with different backgrounds and talents. The camp was a success, validated by all those who attended.
Before the application process started, I was in the preparatory programme year at the University of Central Asia at the Naryn campus. I had always wanted to know how it feels to be a counsellor, because many of my classmates had been at the university's camp in previous years, and told me that it was one of the best experiences in their high school lives. I had the desire to be a guide for high school students who would join the camp in 2018, to share my own experiences, and to help them get along with each other, and to realise how lucky they would be to be part of the “UCA” family.
There are not enough emotions and words to describe how and what each of us felt and experienced throughout the camp. Our routine was both intensive and awesome, that everyone would return to their beds with tiredness, but also with great satisfaction.
The counsellors woke up early in the morning every day and played the funniest songs in the corridors, so loudly that the students would get out of their beds immediately. We would then all proceed to the university’s huge courtyard, stretch our sleepy bodies get ready for the day, and play games that made us laugh even after we were done playing. After that, we went to the dining hall and ate delicious meals cooked by the kindest canteen workers.
The following hours would be devoted to English and mathematics classes taught by professors with international experiences and degrees from top foreign universities. Late in the evening, after the students completed their classes, we would play games and lead evening activities.
To me, the most interesting part was to see how the participants opened up to each other and became more confident speaking English, writing academically and thinking critically. They were so talented and enthusiastic. It was also inspiring to witness students strengthening their bonds with each other every day.
The students had so much fun and learnt a lot, and it is with a great certainty that everyone at the Summer Upgrading Camp left the camp with unforgettable memories. These memories will warm our hearts every time we remember the experience. I genuinely believe that this camp has given everyone who took part in it a great chance to make friendships that will last a lifetime.
